Rain, frost, snow… goodbye to the mild weather! This week, the cold weather is settling in across France.

Wednesday 19 and Thursday 20 November 2025: unsettled weather, rain and snow at low altitudes

On Wednesday, a weather system arriving from the English Channel will cross the country from west to east, bringing rain, showers, and a biting northerly wind. Despite temperatures similar to the previous day, it will feel much colder. Morning frost is expected from the Midi-Pyrénées region eastward after a clear night.

On Thursday, winter will take a serious turn. According to Météo France, the first snowfalls are expected in the lowlands of the north and east, with possible accumulation on the ground in the Ardennes, the Lorraine plateau, the Vosges, the Jura, and the Auvergne. Snow will also make a significant return to the Northern Alps and the Pyrenees. Elsewhere, the weather will remain cold and damp, with highs often between 2 and 7°C…well below seasonal averages.

A freezing week with a wintry weekend

Friday, November 21, 2025: widespread frost and calmer skies

On Friday, get ready to pull out your gloves and hats. Thursday night into Friday is expected to be one of the coldest of the week, with a significant risk of frost and ice. At dawn, frost will affect three-quarters of the country. In the afternoon, despite some sunny spells, temperatures will remain well below average. Showers are still possible near the English Channel, and a few snowflakes could fall in the southwest and east.

A cold and wet weekend

The weekend won't be kind either. Cold, damp, and more morning frosts are on the agenda, especially in the central and eastern parts of the country. Saturday might bring some sunny spells to the east, but Sunday will see the return of rain, except in the south where it should be a bit milder. One thing is certain: winter has definitely returned, with temperatures sometimes dropping by more than 10°C in just a few hours. France is going from an almost spring-like atmosphere to the first chills of the season.
