After a week of spring-like temperatures, winter is making its presence felt. Polar air sweeping across France is launching the first real winter offensive of the season, promising cold, frost, and severe weather across much of the country.
We were almost putting away our coats, but winter is already knocking at the door. Forget last week's 17°C; the mild weather is giving way to a cold snap straight from the Arctic. In the coming hours, France will experience a drop in temperatures, with frost, heavy rain, and even the first snowflakes in the lowlands of the north and east. According to La Chaîne Météo (The Weather Channel ), a low-pressure system moving down from the North Sea, laden with humid air, will cross the country and usher in winter conditions.
A stark contrast after an almost spring-like week, where temperatures sometimes exceeded 12°C above average. Now, the wind is shifting to the north-northwest, bringing in polar air that is gradually gaining ground. The result: unsettled skies, unpleasant winds, and frost across most regions. A taste of winter that shouldn't be underestimated. Pack your scarf and, above all, don't forget your umbrella!
A cold snap that sets in right from the start of the week
Monday 17th and Tuesday 18th November 2025: return of the cold with the first frosts
The week begins under fairly calm skies, but the temperature is already starting to drop. Monday morning will see temperatures between 6 and 10°C in the north and 9 to 15°C in the south, but the cold will set in by midday. The mistral and tramontane winds will make it feel even colder, while on Tuesday morning, frost will return to much of the country. In the afternoon, the mercury will not rise above 6 to 10°C across almost the entire country, with only a few degrees warmer on the French Riviera.
The northern regions are the first to be affected. In Hauts-de-France, temperatures will remain below 7°C, whereas it was nearly 20°C last week. On Tuesday, the drop in temperature will intensify, spreading from Limousin to the east, before reaching the interior of western France on Wednesday. In other words, it will be time to get out the warm coats.
